One of the most unique places just a short distance from Malaga, and in my opinion—an absolute must-see on the map of Andalusia.

Caminito del Rey has an incredible history, which I’ll keep to a minimum so I don’t take away the pleasure of discovering it during a guided walk. The views along the trail, as well as the fascinating stories you’ll hear along the way, will stay with you for a long time, dear reader. An extra thrill comes from the visible, time-worn remains of the old path—officially closed for many years, yet until quite recently it attracted adrenaline-seeking explorers…

Crossing the suspension bridge high above the gorge is a truly impressive moment that stirs up a mix of emotions. On one hand, excitement; on the other, a subtle respect for the height—exactly the combination many of us look for when we travel. These are the moments that make Caminito del Rey more than just a walk—it becomes a real experience that stays with you long after you return.

A history that gives this place its character

The origins of Caminito del Rey date back to the early 20th century, when it was created as a technical path for workers maintaining hydroelectric power plants in the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge. Its purpose was to facilitate the transport of materials and communication between the dams.

The name “The King’s Path” appeared in 1921, when the King of Spain walked the route during the official opening of the Conde del Guadalhorce dam. From that moment on, the place began to exist in people’s minds as something more than just technical infrastructure.

Over the years, the path fell into ruin. Concrete sections began to crumble, railings disappeared, and the whole route turned into a legendary, dangerous trail attracting adrenaline seekers from all over the world. For a time, it was considered one of the most dangerous walkways on the planet.

It wasn’t until a major restoration project, completed in 2015, that Caminito del Rey was brought back to life—this time in a safe, yet still incredibly spectacular form.

Views you simply can’t replicate

What makes the biggest impression is the raw power of nature. The Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge reaches heights of over 100 meters in places, with the path running along sheer vertical rock walls.

As you walk the trail:

  • beneath you—an open drop
  • ahead of you—a winding gorge
  • above you—often just a narrow slice of sky cut by rock

The colors shift throughout the day—from cool tones of rock in the morning to warm, golden light in the late afternoon. Add to that the silence, broken only by the wind and the sound of birds circling above the canyon.

This is not a place that simply “looks good in photos.”
This is a place you have to feel.

Suspension bridge – the highlight of the experience

At the final stage of the route, a suspension bridge awaits— for many, the absolute highlight of the entire journey. The structure gently moves under your feet, while the space around you opens up even more.

This is where:

  • you feel the height the most
  • the adrenaline kicks in a notch higher
  • every step becomes more deliberate

And yet, it’s also one of those moments when you catch yourself smiling and thinking: “this is exactly why I travel.”

Interesting facts worth knowing

  • The entire route is حوالي 7–8 km, with the main “spectacular” section being around 3 km
  • The path is suspended on average about 100 meters above the river
  • In its narrowest sections, the gorge is only a few meters wide
  • In the past, the lack of safety features made it बेहद dangerous—today it is fully secured, but the эмоции remain
  • Along the trail, you might spot wild mountain goats and birds of prey
